Playing Classical Guitar from music sheets cannot be done by reading music first off. Reading guitar music in fact involves an initial working out and deciphering of guitar music sheets and notation before the piece can be played.

This may seem strange because many people think guitarists simply read music right off.

But it must be remembered that the guitar, as a musical instrument, is not like a piano which has all the notes laid out before you. In piano notes are found next to each other and piano music mirrors this. But in Classical Guitar this is not the case. For guitar we have to carefully work out exactly where all the notes are played on the guitar first through a process of deciphering the guitar piece, and then finding where to put our fingers on the fret board, before we can say we have worked out a classical guitar piece. Then we have to play the piece over and over, many times and only then does the sheet music act as a reading prompt that we can follow to assist us while playing the piece.

One can say that playing classical guitar is a bit like being a detective. You get a new guitar piece and then work slowly, bar by bar, through the music to unravel and learn the piece. Hard work is what is required to put yourself into a position where you can say that you fully understand, own and can now play the guitar piece on the guitar.

While most guitar music notation is written on a 5 line staff it does take quite a lot of skill to read classical guitar music notation and even more skill to transfer the music to the guitar fretboard.

The guitar TAB has recently been introduced to help guitarists who don't know how to read music. Guitar TAB has 6 lines, exactly like the 6 guitar strings, and is used to show someone (who cannot read music notation) exactly where to put there fingers on the fret board. TAB is therefore more easy than traditional music scores to use and to work out, if you cannot read music. Remember that TAB is new and only some classical guitar music can be found in TAB or with music notation and guitar TAB combined together.

The principles for Folk and Fingerpicking guitar, and the principles of Classical guitar are exactly the same. The first skill is a natural building block to the next. While a chord guitarist will focus on songs and chords, if you want to get into Classical Guitar you will need to change your focus to music pieces which unlike the chords you are used to are now made up of notes. When you do find classical guitar chords these are unlike any you currently know and, as a collection of notes played together, need to be carefully worked out before they can be played.

Therefore, to begin learning guitar with music you will need to start with simple well chosen classical pieces of guitar music and learn how to read the music for these pieces. Then you will need to progress a step at a time until you are able to manage more complex and challenging pieces. It is very important to be shown which pieces to play initially and which should be played next. This is to ensure that you don't suddenly embark on a piece that is far to difficult for you current level of ability.

I would therefore strongly suggest that you suppress the urge to rush out and learn classical guitar just yet and rather build a solid base with chord guitar and guitar songs until you are at a sufficient level of guitar playing ability and ready to take on Classical Guitar. The best way is for a beginner to get into nylon guitar initially is by playing chords and learning to strum and fingerpick for nylon guitar and essentially have fun with the instrument first. Rather do this initially as Classical Guitar can be quite challenging to learn first off!

Playing the guitar isn't really that hard! Many people who want to try playing the classical guitar fear they aren't capable of doing so, but I've found out that everyone who tries can do it, yes everyone. But only if they just keep on practicing it and don't stop trying!

Define your goal

So just before you start taking lessons for your classical guitar, make a decision that you'll start to learn, and won't bail out. Define a realistic goal for yourself, and don't stop trying until you get there. Do make it a realistic goal though - otherwise you'll get frustrated really soon. For example, don't set your goal to be something as "playing led zeppelin most crazy solos". Your next target, as a beginner, should be something achievable and definite, like - "knowing how to play the chords of 3 known songs". That would be a great goal to try and follow! Now let's see how we can get it you completing your new goal.

Easy songs to play on Classical guitar...

There are many simple songs to play on the guitar. In fact, most of the songs are easy to play if you just take the chords out of it. So what you need to do now is to find songs that you like, Google them for the chords, and see if they use only 3-4 chords in the song. If they do, they are probably easy to play and will be great songs to learn first!

If you're having trouble finding songs, here's one to get you started: "Wild Thing" (originally by "The Troggs"). Surely you know how that song goes. You may be surprised to know that you'll only need 3 chords to play the famous chorus! You will only need the A, D and E chord.

So the next step will be to actually learn these songs... Is it complicated? Not at all. Take the chords you need to learn and have a look at each chord diagram (if you can't find any, just Google "guitar chords diagrams"). Invest 5 minutes per chord for initial practice. Put your fingers on and off, and strum. Then invest another 5-10 minutes to change between those chords, until you can change chords in a reasonable time. When you can do so, you will then be able to play that song! It's really not that hard, all you have to do is keep practicing until you can change chords easily.

Classical guitarists, particularly those just beginning their study or those who are working on difficult sections, should try to avoid excessive tension as they play. Tension causes pain, which in turn can cause lack of focus, and ultimately, mistakes. The following list presents the most common tension points for classical guitarists:

- Hunching shoulders

- Applying excess pressure of the right arm to the guitar. This common problem arises from trying too hard in order to control the right hand.

- Excessive tension in the muscles of the face and neck. The muscles around the mouth, the jaws, and the neck often tighten in sympathetically with those of the arms and hands, during difficult passages.

- Tension in the legs. This generally comes from an improper sitting position.

- Back tension. Excess tension in the back often comes from sitting too long without breaks, or from poor posture. Back tension also enters the picture when the guitarist twists the spine excessively and sits with the right leg extended too far out to the right. Many players also have tension from back problems not related to the guitar. Seek medical attention if you have corrected the more obvious causes stated here.

- Neck tension. Neck tension is usually a result of turning the neck stiffly to the left and trying too hard to watch and control the left hand.

- Tension in the left arm. The common cause for this problem is faulty hand-arm position.

When you have further developed your sense of body awareness your kinesthetic sense, you will be able to gently release whatever excessive physical tension that you discover.

Due to the world-wide popularity of music, (rock, heavy-metal, classical and country just to name but a few) learning how to play an instrument such as the guitar is a dream of many people. Have you always wanted to play the guitar, wishing that you sound like a Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton? If you are willing to put in the time, then what is keeping you from pursuing your dream? Are you confused between taking traditional lessons down at the local music studio, versus guitar lessons online? Do you feel that you will not get your money's worth if you invest into a program on the Internet?

It is an unfortunate fact of life that a certain percentage of people look to take advantage of others. This is especially true when it comes to the Internet nowadays, as its popularity has literally gone through the roof. As you already have a 50 hour work-week, (and by Friday evening you're tired) just how long would this dedication last with regards to taking guitar lessons? You would have to get up awfully early on a Saturday morning to take these lessons.

What if the one guitar teacher at this studio was only into heavy metal music? However, you really want to learn classical guitar. Do you truly believe that you will learn anything from this teacher regarding classical music on the instrument? What if you do happen to find a teacher who "dabbles" in classical guitar, but he/she is not all that proficient in actually playing the guitar in this style. Do you think that he/she would really be a good teacher?

A lesson for a half-hour's worth of instruction nowadays generally costs about $15-20. Again, that is for 30 minutes of instruction, (subtract the 5-6 minutes of "chit-chat" that occurs during that time period). So, for what you're paying, and having a teacher who really is not all that good in playing classical guitar him/herself; do you truly believe that you would become proficient on the guitar in this genre? You know, perhaps the traditional methods of guitar lessons are not as good as they may sound.

As long as you do your due diligence and complete research on the Internet, online guitar lessons present distinct advantages compared to traditional lessons. As I mentioned above, a reputable, quality online site will allow you to download the tutorials right to your computer. And, with some sites an alternative option would be that you can purchase DVD copies of the tutorials and have them shipped to your home. Guess what? You can learn the guitar, going through the tutorials at a time convenient to you!

Regarding that problem of not understanding the instructions the first time you go through a tutorial? True, you cannot stop and verbally ask a question of the instructor on the tutorial, (like you could with a traditional lesson). But you do know, however, that you could replay the tutorial as many times as necessary until you fully understand the methods being taught! A quality online program generally charges you about $30-35 per month for the lessons. Compare that price to your taking 4 lessons per month, (30 minutes each) at your, perhaps not-so-local music studio. $15 times four equals at minimum sixty dollars per month for lessons. I also did not factor in the cost of gas involved in a commute. Now, which method sounds better with regards to your wallet, online or traditional lessons?

Quality interactive programs have professional instructors certified to teach the guitar in many different styles. If you like heavy metal guitar, do the research in finding a program that has teachers who are masters in that style of playing. Go through the testimonials on the site's homepage, which display the comments and reviews of students who have been successfully taught how to play the instrument.

Quality guitar lessons online do exist on the Internet. You must take the time and complete the work through research before you commit money into any program. You would not get "ripped-off" if you decide to take lessons online through a reputable site.
